Dit is algemeen bekend dat name in die antieke tyd sterk verbind is aan betekenis. Name uit die Semitiessprekende gebied het in die reel een of ander godsdienstige konnotasie gehad: 'n gebed tot 'n god, of 'n belydenis oor 'n god, of 'n toewyding van die naamdraer aan 'n god, of vertroue in 'n God.
